Washing Nappies

Changing

Flush the paper liner away. If nappy is soiled, you may like to hold in the toilet when you flush to give it a quick rinse. Place nappy in lidded bucket. Use the same waterproof cover for the next nappy unless it is soiled, in which case swap it for a fresh one.

Soaking

You don't have to soak your nappies if you don't want, simply store in the bucket until you are ready to wash. However, you can still soak if you wish, using a few drops of tea tree oil, or a nappy sanitizer such as Onelife Pure, Nappy Soak or Nappy Fresh. We don't recommend Nappisan as that contains bleaches which may damage elastics in modern nappies. Don't soak waterproof covers.

Washing

Ideally you will have enough nappies so that you wash every two days as this will give you the best use out of your washing machine, and ensure you are not spending every day washing nappies! You have two options, but ultimately you should adhere to the washing instructions on your nappies.

1. Wash at 60 degrees with non-biological washing detergent and no fabric softener

2. Wash at 40 degrees with non-biological washing detergent and no fabric softener, plus add some nappy sanitizer to the wash such as Onelife Pure.

Drying

Virtually all nappies can be tumble dried on a low heat, but by no means do you have to have a tumble drier to use real nappies. How you plan on drying your nappies is an important factor to consider when choosing your type of nappies. We recommend that you try not to tumble dry waterproof covers as this adds to the wear on them, and also don't place waterproof covers straight onto heat sources such as radiators or Agas.
