Jargon Buster
Real Nappies/Washable Nappies/Cotton Nappies/Reusable Nappies/Cloth Nappies
These phrases all mean the same
thing; essentially, nappies that are washed and reused, rather than thrown away
(disposable nappies). When talking about real nappies, the term "nappy" may just
refer to the absorbent part of the nappy, or the whole nappy including
waterproof cover and liner.
Cover or Wrap
This is the waterproof outer that
is used in conjunction with most types of real nappies. It is this that keeps
everything contained within the nappy. It is very important that you have a good
quality waterproof cover as poor covers lead to leaks and may wear out quickly.
Pull up plastic pants are the budget option, but most covers are made from
softer fabrics and fasten with Velcro or poppers giving more adjustability.
Liner
When using real nappies, most
people prefer to use some sort of liner. This is usually a paper liner which can
be flushed away down the toilet along with the solids. When buying paper liners
it is important to ensure that they are biodegradable and therefore flushable.
Some brands describe themselves as "disposable" but not flushable as they have a
plastic content to them which is rather pointless. You can also get reusable
liners made from fleece which work much better at keeping the baby dry (great
for night time) and silk which are great for babies with sensitive skin and
allergies. On the down side, reusable liners need to be washed and so are a
little more messy.
Booster Pads
When using real nappies you are able to adjust their absorbency, something which is not possible with disposables. This can be done by adding booster pads to the nappy. This is usually done for night time so that you do not need to change the nappy for 12 hours or so (unless soiled), but it may also become necessary for during the day too as your child approaches potty training, especially if they are quite a heavy wetter.
Lidded Bucket
Simply a bucket with a lid, used to store your nappies in until you are ready to wash them!
Nappy Bucket Mesh
A large laundry bag which you place in your bucket, enabling you to lift all your nappies out of your bucket into your machine, without having to touch them!
